Competition Finalist: Cavin Family Traveling Felowship
This project was recognized as a finalist in a five-day design competition to design a back country ski patrol center. The motto of the National Ski Patrol is "safety and service" as ski patrol prevents and responds to emergencies on the slopes. In response, the architecture functions as a beacon of safety. In an emergency, flood lights transform a circulation and viewing tower into a shining lighthouse, acting as a homing device for those lost in the woods.
Additionally, the sustainability of the center was of the utmost importance, as the building sits in pristine wilderness. The building's site selection, minimal footprint, passive solar strategies and materials selection all act together to lower the building's environmental impact.
